James – La Sylphide

La Sylphide Rudolf Nureyev
Music : Lovenskjold – Choreography : August Bournonville / Pierre Lacotte after Philippe Taglioni

Rudolf Nureyev made his debut in the role of James on January 5, 1965 in Toronto with Lynn Seymour, replacing the injured Erik Bruhn. Rudolf had only known the part of the role with the veil variation which he had danced with Margot Fonteyn during a gala performance the spring before. James became one of his favourite roles, notably with Carla Fracci as his partner. He was just as happy dancing the Taglioni version remounted by Pierre Lacotte, with Ghislaine Thesmar in the title role.
