Nureyev Gala Vienna

From Wiener Staatsballett:

The dancers presented in a nearly four-hour representation a wide range of their skills in the classical and contemporary repertoire with choreographies by Balanchine (Allegro Brillante), Bigonzetti (Kazimir’s Colours), van Dantzig (Moments Shared), Lacotte (excerpt from the daughter of Pharaoh), Béjart (Songs of a Wayfarer – sung by Clemens Unterreiner), Pickett (Finale from Eventide), Petit (pas de deux from L’Arlesienne), Dawson (On the Nature of Daylight), Nureyev (Adage à la rose from Sleeping Beauty and Act 1 of Don Quixote), de Bana (The Farewell Waltz) and Lightfoot and León (Skew-Whiff). For the first time yesterday all first solo dancers and solo dancers of the Vienna State Ballet were gathered on the same stage: Olga Esina, Maria Yakovleva, Nina Poláková, Liudmila Konovalova, Irina Tsymbal, Ketevan Papava, Vladimir Shishov, Roman Lazik, Kirill Kourlaev, Robert Gabdullin, Denys Cherevychko.

Was supported by the Compagnie international guest soloists and soloists: Isabelle Guérin, Evgenia Obraztsova (Bolshoi Theatre), Semyon Chudin (Bolshoi Theatre) and Friedemann Vogel (Stuttgart Ballet).

With the idea to honour Rudolf Nureyev with a gala at the end of each season, Manuel Legris hoped to create a new Viennese tradition which aimed to become a kind of symbol for the Wiener Staatsballett. The 2011 through 2014 seasons definitely led the Nureyev Gala to a big success and were dedicated to particular events.

Thus in 2013, Nureyev’s 75th birthday and the 20th anniversary of his death were celebrated, and in 2014 the focus of the gala’s programme was on Nureyev’s first performance 50 years ago, on the 15th of October 1964 in the ballet Swan Lake with Margot Fonteyn. In 2015, it will be the 35th anniversary of Nureyev’s version of The Sleeping Beauty – one of the numerous good reasons to continue this new Viennese tradition.
