The White Crow directed by Ralph Fiennes – Trailer
Arriving in UK cinemas on March 22 is The White Crow, a film directed by Academy Award-nominee Ralph Fiennes from a script by BAFTA winning screenwriter David Hare. The film tells the extraordinary true story of legendary Soviet ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev who went from a poverty stricken childhood to blossoming dancer in Leningrad before enduring a nail-biting escape from the KGB in order to defect to the West during the Cold War.
Premiering at the 2018 Telluride Film Festival and screening at the BFI London Film Festival, The White Crow stars Oleg Ivenko as Nureyev alongside Ralph Fiennes and Louis Hofmann as well as Adèle Exarchopoulos and Chulpan Khamatova. While reviews have been mixed, Fiennes’ “love of the ballet is plastered across the screen” says Joni Blythe of One Room With A View.
Inspired by the book Rudolf Nureyev: The Life by Julie Kavanagh, the film tells Nureyev’s story through a fractured narrative that takes us from his early years in poverty to his emergence as a talented ballet dancer to his defection to the West.
