His performance in Four Schumann Pieces was Nureyev’s debut in a role created for Anthony Dowell by Hans van Manen in a commission for The Royal Ballet the year before.
This performance was the opening night of a season for the Dutch National Ballet at the Metropolitan Opera House. The other work performed was Erik Bruhn’s production of La Sylphide, but Nuryev did not dance in that at this performance.
