Rudolf Nureyev’s work ethic, like his schedule, was intense and relentless. His creative range and output over the 35 years of his career was breathtaking: he performed, choreographed, produced, wrote, acted, conducted ... and even sang. But above all else, he danced.
Rudolf Nureyev performed with companies all over the world in a vast repertoire of classical and modern ballets, as well as newly created pieces by the great names of 20th century dance. He refused to cut back as he grew older, jetting back and forth across continents to fulfil an exhaustive schedule of nightly performances. When invitations from ballet companies slowed down, he found new outlets for his creative energies, in contemporary dance.
As a choreographer, Nureyev staged his own versions of the 19th century classics – some for the first time in the West – as well as creating original works. Many of his 15 ballets are still performed today.
His unprecedented global celebrity led to multiple invitations to appear on television shows around the world and to roles in films and musicals.
