Gala Tribute to Alexander Calder

This performance was Martha Graham’s tribute to her friend and collaborator the sculptor Alexander Calder. The programme included Nureyev’s debut in Graham’s El Penitente, and he also danced the Balcony Scene from Romeo and Juliet with Margot Fonteyn. Fonteyn danced a solo from The Wise Virgins by Ashton, and other members of the company performed Graham’s O Thou Desire Who Art About To Sing and Diversion of Angels.
