Gala Tribute to Sir Frederick Ashton

24 July 1970

Nureyev danced in three of the 37 extracts from works by Sir Frederick Ashton that made up the programme of this gala tribute to the choreographer, which was given to mark his retirement as Director of The Royal Ballet. Two of these extracts were role debuts for Nureyev; he never danced in Apparitions again, but he went on to appear in a complete performance of Les Rendezvous in October 1973.

You can read more about Ashton’s work on the Frederick Ashton Foundation website here.
