Martha Graham Dance Company Gala – Americana Evening

This gala performance was part of a season given by the Martha Graham Dance Company at the Mark Hellinger Theatre. The event was introduced from the stage by Martha Graham and opened with the orchestra playing Fanfare for the Common Man conducted by the composer Aaron Copeland, who also composed the music for Appalachian Spring. Other works in the programme, all choreographed by Martha Graham, were Frontier, Diversion of Angels and Letter to the World. At this performance Nureyev only danced in Appalachian Spring, making his debut in the role.
