The critically acclaimed ballet Nurejew, directed by Kirill Serebrennikov, premiered at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre in December 2017, generating massive anticipation. For the first time outside Russia, it is now performed by the Staatsballett Berlin. Featuring a score by Ilya Demutsky and choreography by Yuri Possokhov, this production fuses opera, ballet, and drama to honor the life and career of Rudolf Nureyev, a legendary 20th-century dancer and a powerful symbol of artistic freedom who boldly defied social and political conventions.
A central narrative element is the staging of an auction of Nureyev’s personal belongings, which links pivotal moments of his life, including his dramatic defection to the West and his romantic relationships. Serebrennikov’s direction blends classical and modern aesthetics while openly addressing Nureyev’s homosexuality. The ballet offers a profound look at his challenges and triumphs, from his brilliant Soviet career to his transformative impact on Western dance.
Following its Russian premiere, the work received high praise for its emotional depth but also sparked intense political controversy. Due to the tightening of anti-LGBTQ laws in Russia in 2022, the Bolshoi Theatre permanently removed the production from its repertoire, with Director Vladimir Urin citing prohibitions against “non-traditional values.” Since May 2022, Serebrennikov has lived in exile in France and Germany.
This Berlin premiere is a significant milestone for the Staatsballett Berlin and offers international audiences a rare opportunity to witness a legendary, highly discussed masterpiece that celebrates artistic liberty.
